The Future of Health – Dr Christine Cheung on ‘Are you as old as your arteries?’
How do you take stock of a person's health? The crux of many health condition lies in the blood vessels that carry blood through the body's tissues and organs. In medical practice, some invasive imaging methods are still being used to visualise blood vessel function and integrity. Scientists are beginning to create patients’ own blood vessel cells in the laboratory in order to extract more precise information. These studies would also help us understand what makes certain people genetically predisposed to vascular diseases. Eventually, we hope to identify bio-signatures which show the health status of blood vessels and help predict the risks of illnesses.
